Shrink to DVD for the best DVD copies

by Ethan Hunter

Shrink to DVD is a DVD copying freeware for copying DVD movies to DVDs or hard drives. Usually, the movie DVDs are dual layered (8.5 GB) and the blank discs are single layered (4.7 GB). So, it is obvious that a single movie DVD would take more than one blank disc to accommodate the full movie. This spoils the fun if you have to keep changing discs during the movie. So, you can rely on the Shrink to DVD software to overcome this difficulty. The task of Shrink to DVD is to copy any DVD up to 9.4 GB in size to your DVD of 4.7 GB size.

There is no reduction of value or substance as you shrink the DVD using the proper software programs. All DVD contents are preserved including subtitles, original menus and trailers. Do not repurchase scratched or damaged DVDs though. You can back up your movies and that is a smart move, which many would want to emulate. The formats that are supported are copying from DVD to DVD and Hard drive, Hard drive to DVD and Hard drive, and to burn to DVDR files from DVD files.

All existing DVD contents are preserved, like original menus, full stereo, subtitles, language tracks, trailers, Dolby digital or DTS sounds. The Shrink to DVD is done with great precision. The Shrink software provide a preview of the video when the movie is being copied. The software supports different types of burner drives including single layer, and double layer. There are freely adjustable target sizes of the Shrink to DVD backup. There is an option of recording without any errors and to enable that buffer protection system is also supported. The DVD disks can be quickly erased and rewritten.

You can be sure of the quality of the duplicate with the Shrink to DVD software. However, you must make sure you have a good quality original DVD. It should be a clean copy of the DVD with no scratch marks or fingerprints on it. You should ensure that there is sufficient hard disk space. You should always use good quality recordable DVD disks. These include Verbatim, Fuji, Sony, etc otherwise Shrink to DVD will make the flaws look bigger than they are.

Also, if you are using external USB DVD drive, you must connect it directly to the computer without using the USB hub. The Shrink to DVD software has a simple interface with which you can choose how the firmness is to be spread across the film. The software enables you to delete elements like the video titles, menus, subtitles, audio tracks, etc.

The Shrink reduces the DVD to 47% of its original size which is the usual custom size and produces an identical back-up copy without any changes. Though there are many other types of software programs that can duplicate DVDs but Shrink to DVD has many advantages. It can reduce the size of the content without compromising on the quality of the original. That is why it is considered to be the ideal software for this purpose.

The Adobe Photoshop Story

by David Peters

The effects you can achieve today with editing software are beyond what professional photographers years ago thought possible. Now is a time when there are no limitations on editing images- everything is possible and creativity is the only requirement to make outstanding pictures. There are thousands of programs that help us improve the photographs we take, but none have the respect of the professional and amateur community as Adobe Photoshop. The software is so closely linked with altering images that the term ‘to Photoshop’ has come to mean ‘to enhance pictures’.

You can ‘Photoshop’ any image to include people and places you’ve never met or been to. An image of you on a beach playing volleyball with Elvis and The Beatles would be hard to produce before Photoshop, but now pictures like this are almost commonplace. Anything you can think of, Photoshop can render realistically.

Photoshop is also useful and perhaps more infamous for removing aspects of the image you don’t want. Physical imperfections can be removed from images of people, as is often done in the advertising industry to sell products. Objects that distract from the main focus of the image can be removed just as easily, and the software is so advanced that you can’t tell that the image has been altered.

Photoshop is essential for anyone interested in photography in today’s digital world. The software is just as important and wide-spread as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint in the media industry. You may feel pressure to learn how to use the software, but the resources are easily available to anyone due to the popularity of the program. A lot of people know how to use Photoshop, so if you know anyone in college or high school, ask them if they could teach you.

The birth of Photoshop was in 1989 by the Knoll brothers. The software was being developed for their own use at the time, but the sophistication of the software made it clear that there was a market for Photoshop. They soon founded Adobe and began selling the program in 1990.

The success of Adobe is an outstanding example of the power of the internet. Software designed by Adobe is on nearly every computer in the world, as its free PDF reader has had such widespread popularity. The Adobe Reader is the standard PDF reader, just as Adobe Photoshop is the standard photo editor and is proof of Adobe’s unique dominance of media-related software.

To become a master of Photoshop, you should find a copy that you can try things out with. Someone you know probably has it on their computer, so use their copy to try things out and get used to how Photoshop works. If your friend knows how to use the program, let them impress you with how powerful Photoshop can be. After that, you’ll be hooked on Photoshop forever.

Eventually you’ll want to get a copy for your own use. You can get a trial version that will give you a lot of the features, but for full access you have to get the licensed version. Photoshop is everywhere, so buying a copy will save you a lot of hassle. Now that you have your own copy you’ll probably play around with it for hours trying out all the cool features. While you will learn this way, there is something to be said for taking a class in Photoshop. These will be streamlined to give you the information you need to improve your skills. Once you’ve covered the fundamentals, experimenting will expand your horizon, but without the basics, you will not be as effective at enhancing images as you could be.

When the time comes that you have mastered Photoshop, the only thing limiting what you can do will be your own creativity. You will have a powerful tool at your hands that can create any image you want, so now you can apply this to personal or business projects and be confident that you can pull anything off.

Getting Your Admin Staff Trained On InDesign

by Andrew Whiteman

InDesign is a key part of the arsenal of every graphic designer. It seems to have won out as the designers preferred page layout tool. However, increasingly, InDesign is also being used by general computer users within corporations keen to save money by producing some of their corporate literature in-house. So how do you train your admin staff to use a precision design tool like InDesign?

When attending a training course on InDesign, general users need more than an explanation of how to use the various tools and functions of the software. They need to learn about the page layout arena and how it differs from familiar programs like Microsoft Word. They need an overview of the typographical controls offered by InDesign, an explanation of how to specify colour for print and how to work with images.

InDesign is a precision tool, allowing the user to very accurately specify the attributes of all elements on the page and the relationship between them. Most general users will remain unaware of this precision unless it is pointed out to them. During training, they should learn the use of ruler guides, grids and baseline grids and basically how to make elements align correctly and print in the right place on the page.

The terms used in InDesign often refer back to the pre-electronic age of the typographic industry and is often mystifying to the average user. It’s important to explain these terms, perhaps by giving users some background information and, if possible, by making comparisons with similar features in software they already know. For example, we could compare the term “leading” in InDesign with line spacing in Microsoft Word.

Because InDesign provides so much flexibility in transforming imported images, the average user often goes too far and ends up resizing images either up or down by significant factors. The trainer should explain that resizing up or down by more than 10% or so is not a good idea since this can cause artefacts to appear when the image is printed.

Colour terminology can also confuse the general InDesign user. The key facts that people will need to be taught here are, firstly, the difference between the RGB and CMYK colour spaces; secondly, how the colour print job gets separated into the four different plates and, thirdly, the difference between process and spot colours.

InDesign is meant to be used for creating high quality output. New users of the program must be told how vital it is to pre-flight documents, fix errors and then package the job so it can be sent off to a printing company. They should also be taught how to produce a high-resolution PDF file.

Getting The Most Out of Microsoft Excel In-house Training

by Matthew Fletcher

Class sizes

One of the main benefits offered by on-site training courses is that you can focus on those topics which are most relevant to your organisations. A good technique is to ask the company providing the training for a list of topics they cover on their standard courses then to provide them with a guide as to which features you feel are important, less important or can be omitted all together.

A general rule of thumb is that the bigger the leap you are asking people to make, the smaller the class needs to be. For example, if you decide to get your staff trained on the use of Excel macros and none of them have ever done any programming, then you should restrict the size of the group to between three and six people. By contrast, if you have a group of people who have been using the program for some time, but have never been formally trained and need to be given a better idea of what the program can do, you could probably have a larger group of, say, between seven and ten people.

Which topics should be covered

The obvious answer to this question may seem to be “the version that we are currently using”. However, because of the significant difference between Excel 2007 and previous versions, if you are currently using Excel 2003 but plan to upgrade within the next year or so, it is definitely worth making sure you upgrade before getting your staff trained.

How to Frame Your Picture

by David Peters

The use of a frame can turn an otherwise plain picture into a pleasing one. Usually a foreground element is used to create the frame. Examples are an overhanging tree branch, a window frame, a door, arches, a fence, rows of trees, etc.

Generally frames are used to isolate the main subject of your photograph and create a visually interesting composition. The idea behind framing your photograph is to give your picture depth. There will be times you may choose to keep the detail of the frame (as in a wall, fence or branch), or you may choose to let the frame go completely dark (as in a window frame).

Some ideas to keep in mind when you are organizing a photo: look around the foreground (and sometimes, even middle or background) and choose objects that might be used as a natural frame. There will be times you may need to physically back or even kneel down for a more pleasant composition. You can even try zooming in to include your subject within the frame that you have chosen.

You can use image editing software to creating framing after the fact by combining two or more pictures. There are some very dramatic effects which can be accomplished this way and you are truly only limited by your imagination.

However, a word of caution is necessary here. Though there is nothing wrong with combining different images to create another one, be very careful about employing artificial frames on recognizable scenes and landscapes.

An extreme example of this warning would be to frame the Statue of Liberty by the St. Louis Arch. The picture will not look right unless your purpose is to create dissonance within your viewers’ mind.

So, before you take that shot next time, look around and see if there is an object that you can use as a natural frame. Take a picture without the frame, and another one with the frame, and compare. Betcha, you’ll like the one with the frame better!

How does an ink cartridge work ?

by Andrew James

An inkjet cartridge is the replaceable component of an inkjet printer that contains the ink used when printing. The ink cartridge can also contain the print head itself. Every ink cartridge is made up from one or more partitioned ink reservoirs and some producers also insert electronic contacts and a chip that transmits information to the printer.

Whenever you try to print something, make sure that your ink level is not to low. If it is low, the ink begins to dry on the print head and printing can be hindered. A smooth flow of ink means a high quality print. If dry ink is found on the cartridge print head, gently rubbing with isopropyl alcohol on a swab or paper towel is enough to fix the problem.

In most cases, ink cartridges are very expensive. Many people prefer to use compatible ink cartridges, made by a company other than the printer manufacturer. These cartridges can sometimes match the quality, but with possible savings. Another alternative involves some modifications to allow the use of continuous ink systems that use external ink tanks. Some people even choose to use aftermarket inks. They can refill their own ink cartridge, buy aftermarket remanufactured brands, or even take them to a local refiller to refill them.

Consumers are often surprised at the price of replacing their printer cartridges, especially when compared with that of purchasing a brand new printer. The major printer manufacturers, Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Dell, Canon, Epson and Brother often break even or loose money selling printers, and expect to recoup their losses by selling expensive cartridges over the life span of the printer. Since much of the printer manufacturer’s profits are made up of ink and toner cartridge sales, some of these companies have taken various actions against aftermarket cartridges. Sometimes, even legal action was taken.

Many printer owners choose to refill their cartridges or buy remanufactured cartridges from third parties over buying new cartridges. This saves them a lot of money (they only have to buy the ink and a few other small raw materials) and gets them almost the same quality. A whole industry has grown up around ink cartridge refilling. Customers can find several qualities and types of refilling. However, some are safe and successful while other types can destroy the printer or produce low quality prints. Some of the options are to take the empty cartridges to refillers or remanufacturers, or buy store branded ink.

The cheapest way to get a filled cartridge is to refill it yourself. Almost all cartridges have instructions on how to use and refill them available on the Internet. The Internet can also provide a list of bulk ink sellers that offer pints, quarts, and even gallons of ink. A pint (473 ml) can fill up to 17 large ink cartridges of 27 ml capacity.

Brother, Canon, Dell, HP, and Lexmark cartridges ink cartridges are very easy to refill manually. By using a simple syringe, you can fill some of them. All you need is ink. However, Epson cartridges are usually hard to refill and need a chip resetter. This tool resets the counter chip inside the cartridge. Refilling process can be messy as it involves handling ink directly. Some experience is needed to make the process as clean as possible.

Laser/toner cartridges sold as “compatible” are usually re-filled cartridges, although many third-party newly manufactured cartridges exist. Inkjet cartridges sold as “compatible” are newly manufactured cartridges. Inkjet cartridges sold as “remanufactured” are cartridges that have been used at least once by a consumer and then refilled by a third party. Note that used cartridges might not work as expected.
