Wine Making Kits: Would You Serve This Wine To Company?

by Jim Hofman

Making wine at home has long been popular, with origins in the United States going back to the 19th century. Wine lovers who immigrated from Europe brought with them a knowledge of making wine, and often did so for personal consumption. There still exists a common misconception that making wine at home is illegal. It’s not, as long as you don’t sell the wine you make at home.

Wine making these days has evolved into a very popular hobby, akin to gardening. There’s a certain amount of pride one takes from growing or producing a consumable product. That said, making wine requires certain equipment, which in my grandfather’s time was rather sizeable and took up a lot of space in the basement. Now, you can buy a wine making kit online and have everything you need to become a burgeoning wine maker in just a few days.

A typical wine making starter kit will run anywhere from $125 to $200. You’ll receive everything you need for your first batch, including wine making tools, ingredients, corks, and large sealable jugs to store the wine during fermenting.

Also included are specific, detailed instructions to guide you every step along the way. Normally, the process of making a batch of wine takes 4 to 6 weeks, depending upon the type of wine you’ve chosen to make.

The Process And The Taste

With the detailed step by step instructions, the wine making process wasn’t difficult, but it is a bit stop and go. After the first step, which is mixing ingredients, there’s a 24 hour waiting period so the ingredients can settle. Then, another cleansing process at the 6 day mark, followed by a 4 to 6 week wait while the mixture ferments into wine.

Our first batch was what we’d call a simple red table wine. The taste? Drinkable and palatable, but certainly not worthy of any wine competition medals. Nor did we serve it to our friends. However, like any skill, we improved with practice.

Our next effort was a batch of fruit wine, apricot to be precise. We wanted to try a fruit wine because we really enjoy some of the fruit wines produced by small local wineries on our U.S. wine trails travels. We actually shared this bottling with friends, and were pleased by their positive comments and request for us to make another batch.

We’ve basically stayed with fruit wines since then, as we’re able to experiment somewhat in terms of how much fruit we add and how it affects the end product. While we still enjoy a good wine purchase, it’s been fun to share with people that we’re wine makers!

In summary, if you like wine and get a kick out of gardening, maybe wine making is for you. An element of patience is required, as well as a willingness to experiment and accept that the occasional batch will outright flop. However, you’ll have a hard time surpressing your pride when a friend or family member compliments you on your wine making skills!

Rehabbing a Home? Here are Some Skills You Need to Know

by Erin Cureton

Drywall/ Plaster Repair When rehabbing old houses, cracks and holes in the plaster are common. Often, holes in ceiling plaster are the result of water infiltrating either from the roof, or from a split plumbing line. Holes in walls are often the result of vandalism, but could be the sign of more serious foundation issues. Once the root cause is fixed (see basic water repair section) cut a square area and replace with inch drywall. Once your piece is cut, secure it with multiple drywall screws, mud the gaps, tape, re-mud then sand to a smooth finish.

Basic Water Pipe Repair Usually the hardest part of water pipe repair is finding the leak. You do this by turning on the water, listening for falling water, then visually inspecting where the water is coming from. Once you find the leak, cut out the old section of pipe and cut a section of new pipe to replace it. It is very important to dry the ends of the pipe and rough up the end of the old and new sections of pipe with your sandpaper. Apply flux to each section of pipe and to a coupler that will be used to join the pieces. Put the new section in place. Heat the coupler with your butane torch and apply solder around the edges of the coupler. Once it is sealed all the way around, allow the solder to dry and move on to the next leak.

Drain Repair Drains work by using the force of gravity to expel wastewater down and out of the house. Improperly working drains can be the result of improper pitch in the drain line or a clog. Clogged drains are a very common problem. When a working drain gets clogged, Draino or a quick snake will often do the trick. If that doesn’t work, unscrew the drainpipe and inspected for clogs. If a clog is found in there, simply remove the clog, replace the drain and test the drain. In a vacant house, a clog can become impenetrable. If you encounter such a clog, you need to cut it out and replace that section of drain. Using a saw or grinder cut out the clogged section of pipe. Once the clog is cut out, cut a similar length of PVC pipe to replace it. Either connect the new pipe to the old with PVC connectors or with a fernco connector. If you use the PVC connectors make sure that you clean the old pipe thoroughly and apply PVC cement to ensure a proper seal.

Replacing Light Fixtures Remove the old fixture by unscrewing the wire nuts or by cutting the wires. Strip off a section of the wire casing and attach you new fixture with wire nuts. Be sure to tape off any exposed wire with electrical tape. Since each fixture will come with its own set of instructions, be sure to read those instructions thoroughly to insure proper installation. Electricity can cause severe injury if you do not follow instruction implicitly. You should always use an amplitude meter to insure that power is off to the fixture to avoid electrocution.

Window Installation Carefully remove the old window. Be sure not to damage the old wood frame and the window sill. Once the window is removed place wood shims on the exterior of the sill and level the shims. Secure the shims. Place the new window in the opening. Place more wood shims along the sides at the top, middle and the bottom. Once the sides are secure, make sure you can easily open and close the window. Fill the gaps around the window with expanding foam insulation or fiberglass insulation.

Refinishing Wood Floors First remove the old carpet. Then remove all of the tack strips, staples, nails and quarter round molding. Once the floor is clean, run your drum sander with the grain of the wood. It is very important that you keep the drum sander moving at all times though. If you leave it sit it will quickly eat into the floor, leaving the finished floor wavy looking. Start with 36-grit sandpaper, then 80-grit, and then 100-grit. Once the main body of the floor is sanded, do the edges with an edge sander using the same grits of sandpaper that you used on the main floor. When all the sanding is complete, sweep the floor, and then vacuum the floor. Apply your choice of stain or apply polyurethane directly to the wood. Finish with 2-3 coats of polyurethane. Replace the trim molding along the floor.

Laying Tile The key to a good tile project is a good foundation. Whether you are tiling a wall or floor, the foundation must be plumb or level and the surface must be flat. Once the old covering has been removed lay a product like Hardi-Backer, an extremely durable cement-based product. Begin tile installation by troweling on a thin application of mastic over a three to four foot area. Set the tile in place and push gently to secure the position. Place a spacer next to the tile and position the next piece. Continue in this fashion until the tiles are all in place. Allow the mastic to dry for 24-hours before grouting. If you are laying a natural stone tile (travertine, slate, marble) be sure to seal the tile prior to grouting. If you don’t, the tile will appear hazy. Remove all tile spacers. Mix a grout color of your choice, push the grout between the tiles with a rubber float and clean up all excess grout.

Texturing a Ceiling To get a perfectly textured ceiling, dip a paint roller with a long (4 foot) handle into a bucket of top-coating mud. Roll the mud onto the ceiling. Push your texturing brush into the mud and pull back quickly to create a random dimple pattern all across your ceiling. After it dries finish by painting with a white ceiling paint or a color to complement your walls.

Painting a Room Be sure to prep the wall surface prior to painting. Do this by applying a thin coat of spackle to any pin holes or cracks, then sand to a smooth finish. Next, apply one coat of latex primer to the surface of the walls using a roller. After the primer dries apply your paint. Two coats of a flat paint will generally provide complete coverage. To edge the walls, apply painter’s tape to the trim, and brush the paint onto the edges. After you have painted the edges, remove the painter’s tape and you’re done.

Landscaping The exterior is the first impression people will get of your house. Take time to remove all the overgrown 1950’s era plants and replace them with smaller more modern looking plants. After removing the old shrubs, cultivate the bed and mix in organic materials like manure, compost or peat moss. Arrange your new plants on top of the beds. Once you are happy with the arrangement, remove any burlap or plastic and plant them. Be sure not to bury the root balls of shrubs. You want to plant the shrub with just a little of the ball showing above the ground surface. Follow spacing instruction on the containers so that your new landscape doesn’t look like overgrown in two years. After planting the large landscape in this fashion, take time to plant flowers around your new plants and enjoy your new look.

Using The Office Button And Quick Access Toolbar In Microsoft Excel

by Andrew Whiteman

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 contains no menus or toolbars. However, it does include a feature called the Office Button which bears a remarkable similarity to a menu as well as a Quick Access Toolbar which functions a lot like the toolbars found in previous releases of Microsoft Office. In this article, we’ll take a look at these two features and see how they work.

Excel’s Office Button

The Office Button is found in the top left of the Excel screen. When you click it, a menu appears which resembles menus found in most software programs and also in previous versions of Excel. The Office Button menu allows you to create, open, save and print documents. It also contains options for preparing documents for distribution, closing the currently active document and exiting Excel altogether.

The Office Button also contains a list of the recently opened files. Next to the name of each file is a pin icon. This icon is used to pin the associated document. Pinning a document means that it won’t disappear from the list of recently opened files. By contrast, unpinned documents will eventually disappear from the list as files are created and opened.

It is also here that you will find “Excel Options”. (This is equivalent to Tools-Options found in previous versions of Excel.) Excel Options are displayed as a column of categorised tabs on the left of the dialog. Just click on a tab to reveal options in that category. The Excel Options customise the way in which Excel works. Let’s look at a few examples…

Excel’s Developer Tab (which contains commands for working with macros) is not visible when Excel is first installed. To make Excel display it, choose “Excel Options” from the Office Button and, in the “Popular” category, switch on the option “Show Developer Tab in the Ribbon”.
A second example… By default, each new document you create has three sheets. If you find this too many or too few, you can change the number of sheets which each new work will contain. Choose “Excel Options” from the Office Button and, in the “Popular” category, under the section headed “When Creating New Workbooks Include this Many Sheets”, simply enter your preferred number of sheets for each new workbook you create.

The Excel Quick Access Toolbar

The Excel Quick Access Toolbar is usually displayed in the top left of the screen, next to the Office Button. It functions in a similar way to the toolbars found in old versions of Microsoft Excel.

By default, the Quick Access Toolbar contains only three commands: saving the current workbook, undoing commands and redoing commands.

To the right of the three default commands is a menu which enables you to personalise the Quick Access Toolbar and determine which buttons are displayed and which commands remain hidden.

Each of the commands in the Quick Access Toolbar menu is a switch: if a command is active, when you select it, it will be removed: if a command is hidden, choosing it will make it visible.

Another method of customising the Quick Access Toolbar is to add your favourite options from the Excel Ribbon. Just right click on an option in any of the Tabs of the Ribbon. In the context menu which pops up, simply choose “Add To Quick Access Toolbar”.

If you find that you are using the Quick Access Toolbar a lot, you may find it convenient to move it below the Ribbon. Simply choose “Show Below The Ribbon” from the Quick Access Toolbar drop-down menu. You can also make the Quick Access Toolbar more accessible by minimising the ribbon. To do this, double-click on the name of any ribbon Tab or choose “Minimise the Ribbon” from the Quick Access Toolbar menu.

How Keywords Can Help Your Pay Per Click Advertising

by Brian Basch

A good list of keywords is vital for a successful pay per click campaign. You should be diligent in your research and attempt to find the best keywords. Try to compile a substantial list and leave no stone unturned to be successful.

You may be puzzled about how you can do this. Let us use a keyword like “loan” for our example. This is a well searched keyword. Because it is also very saturated it is hard to get a good placement with it. Extending your keyword research will earn you some better placements.

Try to imagine all the ways that your base keyword can be searched for. When they type in “loans” a searcher can be looking for several things. It is important to put yourself in a searcher’s mind set and understand how they are interpreting your keyword. Some ideas would be; “bad credit loan,” “getting loan” etc.

All these keywords are small variations on your original keyword. You can research them and find more niche keywords. In fact there are so many different loans to be had. Put these keywords together with your initial list and look at all the different keywords you have made from your original keyword.

You can also start a campaign made up of lenders names. Added to this you can put .com. a country extension or .net at the end of your keyword. It does not matter that there are no domains with that particular keyword; searchers will still use these domain style keywords and you will get some extra visitors.

Highly competitive words are not such a good idea, because there will be a lot of people bidding for them. You can find niche keywords that are related to the original keyword and not so general. You can turn around key phrases like “bad credit loan” into “loan bad credit.” In this way you will find different searchers.

Campaigns and keywords can be created around the different search keywords that your potential buyers will be looking for. It is wise to try all sorts of different keywords and phrases as searchers can use a wide variety of keywords and phrases.

Initially you can use; misspelled words, domain names, products, serial numbers and plurals. Sometimes searchers forget to put spaces in between words and when you use these types of key phrases you can find more traffic.

Company names are good as are domain names and variations on them. You can use adjectives like “best and “cheap. Think about different spellings of keywords.

Web logs are a good source of keywords. These will help you to discover the ones your visitors are using to get to your site.

A successful pay per click campaign is based on a list of good keywords. It is important to explore all avenues before you put your keywords into action.

Bartending Certification: Goldmine Or Waste Of Time?

by Jim Hofman

There’s an obvious appeal to the bartender. He or she is, at any given moment, a social director, a friendly ear, or simply the person who delivers your drinks with a smile. A great bartender is one of a bar’s greatest assets, often bringing in a consistent crowd of regulars who enjoy stopping in and adding to the bottom line.

Bartenders themselves have a unique advantage, all things being equal. In the right establishment, an effective bartender can earn full time wages working part time hours. It’s not unusual for these hardworking barkeeps to take home several hundred dollars per shift. As a result, the bartending profession is viewed with great respect and is a desired occupation for many.

Breaking In To The Bartending Profession

Very frankly, the best way to land a bartending job is to have direct experience as a bartender. Of course, this is a classic Catch 22. Most establishments strongly prefer to hire experienced bartenders since the bar business brings in the most profit. But much like any other profession, there is an educational alternative that might help certain individuals land their first bartending job, or even advance their career.

We are, of course, referring to bartending schools. These schools are located in most major cities, and function as a means to acquire practical experience without actually working on the job.

Bartending Schools 101

Here are some of the things you can expect to learn after you enroll in a bartending school:

- Understanding the bar culture and how to deal with customers.

- Exploring relationships between bartenders, servers, and bar support personnel.

- Education and certification for state requirements, such as alcohol awareness programs.

- Comprehensive mixology modules to learn how to mix drinks.

Typically, these and other course elements are completed in 6 to 8 weeks. Costs vary, although a student should expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to a thousand dollars to complete the course.

Are Bartending Schools Worth The Time And Money?

Those who enroll in a bartending school and expect to land a six figure bartending job upon graduation will be sorely disappointed. It’s safe to say, though, that completing a program will help you land your first job. Bartending is a profession where personal characteristics and on the job performance mean everything. A diploma won’t help you when you’re behind a busy bar with demanding customers clamoring for drinks.

We do recommend reputable bartending schools as a means to get your first bartending job or as a refresher course for career changers. However, expectations should be limited. Personal characteristics and experience are key in the bar business. Use a bartending school to help you determine whether or not bartending is a career that matches your skill set.

Easy Tips to Banish Belly Fat!

by Gail M. Davis

Breast cancer, heart disease, and diabetes are just three of the many health concerns attributed to too much belly fat. It doesn’t matter if your abdominal fat is due to menopause, beer, or food, experts agree that it’s dangerous and needs to be eliminated! This extra weight is not only unsightly from the exterior, but the damage that the deep fat does to your internal organs is alarming! There are simple steps that you can take to solve this problem. Let’s look at a few of the most important ones here.

Key to solving this problem is learning to make the right food choices. The food pyramid, the nutrition fact label, and portion size recommendations should all be as familiar as the birthdays of your children, or the stats of your favorite sports team! Eating healthy, highly nutritious foods on a regular basis is a must!

Eliminating sweets from your diet is another important step. This would especially include sweet drinks and drinks containing artificial sweeteners. Water should be your main beverage of choice. Skim milk and unsweetened tea are acceptable as well. At the same time, severely limit sweet foods. They provide nothing of value to the diet.

It is impossible to downplay the significance of exercise in the fight against belly fat. A minimum of thirty minutes of cardio should be competed each day, with activities such as power walking, running, biking, swimming laps, racquetball, skating, basketball, biking, jumping rope, and dancing. In addition, weight training and target exercises should be included in the daily workout.

Severely limit stress! The hormone cortisol is released during stress, and researchers believe that it stimulates the storage of fat around the abdomen and belly. Men of all ages and older women are most prone to this condition. So sign up for a yoga class, dust off your fishing rod, or spend more time with your dog, but whatever you do, don’t stress!

By following these steps, belly fat can be eliminated or greatly reduced. Patience is imperative as it takes several months for the body to show off the benefits of a new program. There are other easy steps that can be taken to deal with this condition, but these are by far the most important ones.

304 quality free leads a month isn’t shabby

by John Wallen

Relationships are important for any network business to survive. I have a marketing system that helps me qualify only those who are interested in growing a home business. I have net workers coming to me, I don’t have to bother searching for them.

This to me is as close to networking perfection as you can get! I once used to call a lot of leads, and that was very costly and consumed most of my time. Maybe you can relate to this, because it was absolutely getting me no where in my network business.

I was using many traffic generating tools on the internet. I used so many different ones with very little success. This was like a clogged drain of internet marketers pitching their internet opportunity, and no one is paying attention to what they are trying to sell. My inbox was always full of garbage and scams.

Now that I have put this new system, my magnetic lead attractor to work for me. I’ve created endless free leads! Around three hundred a month, not too brag, but this is a fact. And these are people that are definitely interested in networking.

I’ve been getting so many high quality leads, I had to create an automated follow up system to take care of all of those interested prospects. I have put in motion a home business with several profit centers.

This system works like a charm, it’s the best idea I’ve seen in along time. This is creating the success I was so hungry for in my home business. There’s no reason this can’t work for anyone wanting too really grow their network quickly!
