Its “Yahoo” Time for Search Engine Users!

by Dane Masters

Search engines are a boon for people seeking information on the Net. Especially people who would like to get some materials for teaching or writing or conducting research, these search engines come in very useful. So also for people from other fields like business and so on. Every search engine works on the basis of keywords. When specific keywords are typed into the given space, the search engine displays an entire list of websites for your perusal. The choice of search engine may vary. Most claim Google to be their favorite, a few go for AOL or Netscape. But the trend is now moving towards Yahoo as a better search engine. The reasons for this change are not far to find.

The results pages come up as a result of the plain search, on a search engine. What is a plain search? Type in the keyword or keywords, and anything and everything related to that particular keyword is displayed for your benefit. Do you have the patience to go through website after website, seeking what you want? Forget it! Not only is the hunting exercise too much of a time-waster, but you cannot even guarantee that the information you get is truly credible! And what if you are in a hurry for some quick results? Not possible!

Now, Yahoo is different! Yahoo does not deal with plain searches, but with Boolean searches. No, this is not an African word! What this type of search signifies is that Yahoo does not display each and every page connected with the keyword or keywords. The results are based on how relevant the page is to your specifications; not getting every page with that particular keyword mentioned on it. There is another option open to the Net browser–searching via themes or categories. So just choose the category you want displayed, or the theme you want, and hey presto! Yahoo gets all the articles related to your theme or category plus your keyword (s) for you!

Any number of benefits are available to the Yahoo search engine user, since the search engine is presented as part of the main portal itself. If you should choose to look for Los Angeles, for instance, then Yahoo displays only pertinent information about the place–the map of the area, latest news updates, classifieds coming from that place, and description of Los Angeles. Other search engines would go the whole hog and put up lists and lists of websites containing the words, Los Angeles! Thus, the Yahoo search engine permits you to sort out what you want and what you want to discard (manual filtering); compare results with other themes as well as across themes; and access further information connected with your search results. Now, tell me of another search engine that offers so much!

The category option in Yahoo search engine enables you to process the displayed information such that you take out only the best. Going back to the example of Los Angeles, the results obtained would be so pertinent to what I wanted, that if I were writing an article about the place, it would provide an all-round perspective to the reader. Therefore, I say, “Hooray for Yahoo”!
