Poker Glossary

by Young Buck

Below is a list of some of the jargon you will hear at the poker tables. If you don’t know what these things mean, you will feel like a rookie at the tables. This is just a short list of a few of the things you might hear.

The Bubble- In tournament poker there always is a point where prizes start to be awarded. When you reach the point where the next player eliminated means everyone will cash in the event, you are on the bubble.

Big Blind- In Texas holdem games, two players are forced to put money in the pot before the cards are dealt. Since they must bet before they see the cards, these forced bets are called blinds. The big blind is the larger of the two bets required. The player to the big blinds right usually puts in half the amount, and is the small blind.

Call- When a player calls a bet, he only matches the most recent bet made into the pot. Example, my opponent raises to $300, to stay in the hand I must call, or raise. To call, I need to put $300 into the pot.

Button- The button represents who the dealer is for a particular hand. The button rotates so that each player plays as the dealer in his turn. This is done to keep the game fair, as being the dealer has a built in advantage as the best position at the table.

Counterfeited- Although not the only example, being counterfeited usually occurs when your small pair runs into higher pairs appearing on the board. Another counterfeit situation is when you have 2 pair and are beaten by the top pair when the river pairs the board.

Dog- Dog is short for underdog. Simply means you are an underdog to win the hand.

Drawing Dead- This is a bad situation to be in. You are drawing dead when, even if you make the best possible hand you can, you are still beaten. Drawing to a flush when your opponent has a full house is na example of drawing dead.

Family Pot- A family pot is a pot in which most, if not all players at the table call to see the flop.

Flop- The flop is the three communities cards turned up by the dealer. After the betting on your hole cards is completed, the flop comes, and then another round of betting ensues.

Hit- When you “hit”, the flop, turn, or river helps your hand. When you “hit the flop big”, you have made a very strong hand, or an incredible drawing hand.

Implied Odds- Implied odds refer to the expectation of profit you can earn if you make your hand. For example, when you need 1 card for your flush on the turn, you actual odds are 1 in 5. If you and your opponent have lots of money, and you think your opponent will call some bets, your implied odds are much greater.

Kicker- Your kicker is your unpaired hole card. If you have AJ and your opponent A9 and the board is A7432, your J kicker beat his 9 kicker, and you win the hand.

Over Card- This is any card larger than any on the board. With AQ and the flop J85, you have two over cards.

Pocket Pair- A pocket pair is simply a pair in your hole cards. You have approximately a 1/16 chance of being dealt a pocket pair, and a 1/220 chance getting AA.
