Many companies today are focusing the majority of their time and effort on their primary areas of expertise and hiring subcontractors to handle the less profitable areas of their businesses. This split in business practices has become more and more necessary in todayas economy, and subcontracting does have the potential to make both the contractor and contracted more profitable. However, it has to be handled correctly.

Cost is one of the driving factors in subcontracting. Why build the product in house if someone outside can build it faster, cheaper, and better? The problem is that companies often focus on the cheaper and ignore the faster and better.

Most subcontracting goes to commercial houses that specialize in building a specific line of product. Commercial houses that have grown into companies accepting anyone and everyone’s outsourcing business have no experience building YOUR product. If you simply hand them the specifications for your specific product to your subcontractor and walk away you are asking for them to give you bad product back. This is especially true if your product is complex or involves very specific processing knowledge to build. They may be able to build it cheaply, but who knows better how best to build your product than you do?

Communication is essential. This is true of no matter where your subcontractor is located. Of course, if you subcontract your manufacturing to countries where English is not the primary language, communication can become an even greater problem that exists simply across the corporate divide. It doesnt matter if the subcontractor is down the street or down the globe. A digital camera with a picture of the problem sent to the design engineer in the U.S. with the right answer can solve it faster than flying an engineering team down to the maquiladora. Nor does your particular product type change the basic principle.

The company I used to work for worked with many small machine shops that had only recently introduced e-mail. In all industries, there are certain standards that must be met. However, a larger company may be able to help train quality control staff at a small company. Inspection and testing facilities owned by subcontractors often have great demands placed on them by the contracting companies. To meet these demands, it is not unusual for a subcontractor to upgrade its testing facilities. Knowing what the larger companies already have for testing equipment, the subcontractor might choose to invest in a testing capability to which the larger company does not already have access. Because of the open lines of communication, the larger company should know of this new equipment as soon as it is available. This has the potential to benefit both companies. The company doing the subcontracting can quickly identify areas, even in in-house products, where the new capability can identify defects, thus improving their products. The subcontractor gets a very quick return on investment since the new equipment is put into use quickly.

There are many positive outcomes that can come from subcontracting, if it is done correctly. Information, equipment upgrade cost, and opportunities can be shared between companies on both sides. Although it is often looked at only in terms of the short-term financial advantages, improvements in such areas as manufacturing processes and the skill sets of employees can have long-term effects.

Other notable alumni who received Nobel prizes include Edward B. Lewis, Linus Pauling, Carl D. Anderson and William A. Fowler.

As gas prices continue to rise to unprecedented levels, every available resource is being investigated to replace fossil fuels by august official bodies like the energy commission to the average Joe and Josephine in the street. Hydrogen for cars will not only provide the chance to explore new energy sources; it will also open up better potential for us to improve how we travel overall.

Research into hydrogen fuel is quickly proving it’s potential as a leading resource to replace fossil fuels. It is a naturally occurring element that is found in many things including water to many products you will find in your garden. Its abundance in nature means it has a great potential and is seen as a valuable resource that can be tapped into to meet the growing demand for a cheap, clean and reliable source of energy.

Hydrogen fuel for cars is far more efficient and cleaner to produce than fossil fuel. To give you an example: for gasoline production a refinery would process three hundred billion gallons of water, which is itself becoming a more and more valuable and depleted resource; the same amount of hydrogen would require only one million gallons of water, a savings too large to ignore.

The gallon of gasoline equivalent to hydrogen costs about half as much as gasoline but improves fuel economy by over two-thirds more. Hydrogen fuel also decreases engine operating temperatures, all but eliminating emissions as well as the unwanted carbon footprint.

A big problem hindering the production of hydrogen-fueled vehicles is the lack of available hydrogen fuel. In the future, home hydrogen refueling stations may become a realistic possibility, but they are not currently affordable for most people.

If cars ran only on electricity that was generated on board via hydrogen fuel, we would see a new horizon in vehicle design. The equipment needed for propelling a car would be far more basic, and much smaller–thereby eliminating the problem of design limitations. Some such limitations involve having to account for a heat-producing engine, as well as bulky floorboard configurations which are required for driveline equipment currently.

Hydrogen for cars will become more cost effective as hydrogen production increases, creating a new era of energy consumption. Using hydrogen will decrease society’s dependence on fossil fuels, an added benefit for the environment. The reality is that gas prices will not retreat much from this current high mark, which will only increase the pace at which hydrogen fueled cars and the equipment needed to make them a reality develops.

Using Dreamweaver To Add JavaScript To Your Web Pages

JavaScript is a well-established scripting language which creates code that can execute both an HTML page loads and after it has loaded. It is very efficient since it can run independently on the computers of the visitors to your web site. Thus freeing up your server to do other things. It is so widely used on web sites that, though it is possible for a user to disable JavaScript within their browser settings, most people will need to leave it active if they are to interact with the sites they visit. Adobe Dreamweaver allows web developers to add JavaScript to their pages by using what it refers to as “behaviors”.

A Dreamweaver behavior is an automatically generated JavaScript function which is activated by a given user or browser action. To use behaviors, choose Window > Behaviors. Before attaching a behavior, you must highlight one of the elements on your page such as a hyperlink or image. Then you need to choose a behavior by clicking on the plus sign in the top left of the Behaviors window.

Whenever you attach a behavior to a web page element, Dreamweaver attempts to guess what the event which should trigger the JavaScript (mouse click, rollover, etc.). If Dreamweaver fails to assign the event that you actually want, simply choose a different event from the drop-down menu next to the event name.

Dreamweaver contains several types of JavaScript behaviors. Some relate to images, others display windows and messages, others can be used on forms and form fields and still others can be used to manipulate CSS attributes. To get a flavour of how behaviors work, let us examine a behavior in each of the above categories.

The classic example of an image manipulation behavior would be the “swapImage” behavior. This venerable JavaScript function causes the source of a given image to change when the mouse passes over the image and back to the original when the mouse leaves the image. This behavior can either be explicitly applied to an image or can be generated automatically by inserting a rollover image.

Dreamweaver’s “Open Browser Window” behavior allows you to create the controversial JavaScript pop-ups. Due to its extensive misuse, many people have developed an extreme intolerance of this feature. However, there are situations where it is useful. For example, if a user is in the middle of filling out a form and clicks a help icon next to a certain item, a pop-up window is an ideal method of displaying the help topic.

In the form manipulation behaviors category, we have “Set Text of Text Field” and “Validate Form”. The “Validate Form” behavior only applies to text fields and enables you to ensure, first of all, that a field has not been left blank; secondly, that a field contains a valid email address; thirdly, that a field contains a numeric value; and, fourthly, that a field contains a number within a given range.

Dreamweaver contains a couple of very useful behaviors which manipulate the content of HTML elements. To use these, you need to give the element and ID (for example,

). The DIV element offers the greatest flexibility when using this behavior since it can contain just about anything you want. You highlight the element which will trigger the behavior and then choose Show/Hide Elements from the Behaviors panel menu. Click on any listed element then click either the Show or Hide button.

If you have used several JavaScript behaviors on a page, you may find that the amount of code generated by Dreamweaver becomes quite significant. It is therefore usually a good idea to place all of this code in an external JavaScript file and then link this file to your page. To do this, click on the “Code” button in the top left of the page and locate the SCRIPT tags which contain the JavaScript. Select all of the code between the SCRIPT tags and cut it to the clipboard. Next, create a blank file with the file extension .js and paste all of the code inside it. Finally, to link your page to the .js file, position your cursor inside the opening SCRIPT tag and type src = “myfile.js” substituting the name of your JavaScript file for “myfile.js”.
