Owning a condo, New York City comes with many benefits over owning a house. You no longer need to worry about the trash being got rid of, snow being swept away from the path or the exterior of the property maintained.
However in order to have these services carried out one is expected to pay a small fee on a monthly or yearly basis. But although you need to make your association fees each year you haven’t got to worry about calling in contractors to do the work yourself as this is all done through the company employed to maintain the external features of the property.
Although you may find that you are required to keep to certain rules and regulations so are all the residents who have a condominium in the same property as you. This means that everything remains in top condition and ensures that everything at all times looks clean and tidy. Normally these rules and regulations will pertain to the external features of your home.
Sometimes to carry out works internally to a property there may be certain regulations that you as owner of the condominium need to know about and which you must adhere to. For example if you are thinking about having wooden floors in yours then before you do so find out if you need to get permission and if you do, does some insulating material need to be placed down before the flooring. The big problem with wooden flooring is that although it may look nice when walked on the sounds produced can carry through to rooms below.
Also if you are intending to make any changes of a major nature within the condo then you need to check not only with the building association but also the local building authority if this can be done. If you don’t then you may well find yourself having to get all the work taken down and converting the property back to the original condition it was in.
Before you purchase a condo in New York City or any other city for that matter check through the rules and regulations they have concerning upkeep and maintenance of properties. Generally the set of regulations they have are standard but some associations may have more specific ones as well.
But living in a condo, New York City may be fun but you have to factor in what it is going to cost you not just in mortgage payments each year. Depending on where the condo is and how big it is will affect the kind of association fees you are charged. Some may only be a few dollars each month but others may be a few hundred.
