Benefits of Writing

by Danise B. Keasda

Like any other type of art, writing is rewarding in and of itself, just as much as is composing and playing music, painting or sculpture. Like producing a beautiful object in any other medium, writing something which is a good piece of work is very rewarding to the writer. Even better, the writer can share their work with others and communicate something of themselves to others. Whatever you write: story, poem, essay or article, writing is an activity which can boast of many benefits. Here are a few of the benefits of writing:

1. Writing trains the mind. More so than almost any other activity, writing teaches you to think., You have to think about what your subject will be, how you intend to approach the issue about which you are writing, the phrasing which will best get your point across and so on. Every step of the way, you must use critical thinking skills, sharpening them in the process.

2. Self expression. Writing is a great way to express feelings, problems and anything that we want to get off our chests and onto paper. It is much easier to express things on paper (for some) than it is to say by mouth. Writing is another way to communicate with others, especially in situations that may be frustrating, embarrassing or just too hard to talk about face to face. Writing allows everyone to free themselves from any hardships that may be occurring.

3. Building confidence. When it comes to writing, those who write are able to build up their confidence levels. Because writing is generally an activity that is done alone, what comes out of the writing is something that belongs to the writer only. Writing allows an individual to have the confidence to know that he/she can express things without having to worry about something not being correct. Writing is very helpful for younger children in school who need a self-esteem and confidence boost.

4. Building speaking and reading skills. Writing can help build not only writing skills, it trains you to become a more careful and thoughtful reader and also improves speaking skills. A person with good writing skills is likely to also have sharp speaking skills. Not only this, but a good writer can even help others to “find their voice”, as it were through their writing.

5. Health benefits. Believe it or no, writing even has health benefits. Writing is something which can be a coping strategy for the writer, allowing them to deal with stress. Fiction writers especially are able to put their own experiences on the page and work through them in this way. Writing can also be a good way to present and preserve memories.

No matter what you choose to write, once you have begun to produce work you will feel a sense of accomplishment at having been able to communicate a bit of yourself to the world – and that’s something to feel good about.
